Quick question: how many word doc pages should a foreword be?  My editor suggested 4 manuscript pages, but I'm not sure what that would be in a word doc.

Also, what should go into a foreword?

I have someone I want to ask to write one for my book, and I want to be specific about what goes into a foreword.

thanks.

Why don't you look at forewards in some books in your discipline, and see what the norms are?

Surely any editor these days means "Word doc pages" when saying "manuscript pages" -- just as the contract gives you a deadline for "manuscript submission."

Yes, manuscript pages refers to double-spaced pages in a Word document (as opposed to typeset pages).

As for the contents, this varies with the purpose, and you should talk with your editor about it, or, as another poster suggests, check comparable books.  At my press, most of our forewords are to translations, usually in cases where the author is well known outside of English but needs to be introduced to English-speaking readers, but that's probably not the case for your book.
