Dear Forumites,

I would be interested to hear your impressions of Fordham University Press. If you have worked with the press in the past, was it a positive experience? What is your sense of its stature in the world of academic publishing? Thanks in advance for any insight you can offer.

What field? I don't think people can say much about stature without knowing the field you're in. I can say they're non-existent in mine.

I'm in religion, and one of my colleagues published her "tenure book" with Fordham.

It's stronger in ethics, theology, and philosophy than it is in historical work, with some exception made for stuff that is Catholic religious history.  But some of the strongest offerings from Fordham in ethics/theology/philosophy are most often from Catholic perspectives, too.

The humanities editor there is quite impressive, and the press seems to have improved considerably since they hired her a few years back.  It was she who built up Stanford's humanities list all through the 80s and 90s before being dumped by them when times got tight.  This caused a big stink at the time, and she seems to have brought some excellent authors with her, especially in continental philosophy, religion, and theory.

Theory's kind of dead, but the previous poster is right that if you like the stuff Stanford did 10-20 years ago, then Fordham's your press. (Personally I think Stanford's gotten a lot stronger recently, and is better off without the old deconstructors.) Can you get tenure with it? Depends on your institution. If you're worried, ask your chair or pursue a contract with Oxbridge, Harvard, Stanford, etc.
