Hmm, I very rarely tip, but that's normal here. THere's a cup on the top of the counter for tips. The occasional person will throw a bit of change in there. I'll have to do that every now and then.

I wrote the bulk of my dissertation in coffee shops that were "self service" so it wasn't necessary to tip.  No tip jars even.  But I was careful to not go during lunch rush, even if I bought lunch, because it would be so packed. Usually I'd go after the big lunch rush and stay through dinner time.

The dilemma about "what/how much to buy" to keep my seat led me to learn how to drink coffee!

I pretty much have a personal rule that I'm only there as long as I've got food / coffee in front of me. So, if I go in and buy a coffee, I either leave when it's finished or order something else. I can usually get 60-90 minutes out of a large coffee.

I rarely work in coffee shops, but do when it is the only way I can make myself work.  I will buy something when I get there but may continue working at the coffee shop even after I finish.

I actually prefer food courts in malls. There is no pressure to buy anything. After Starbucks closed in our city the remaining coffee shops don't seem conducive to hanging out and working. They tend to be quite bustling and you don't see people hanging out and working. On campus I'm more likely to sit in the library than a coffee shop.

I've found a new writing hang-out: my local pub. It's a nice 15 minute stroll away to get me thinking about what I've got to do. It's cosy, with a lovely roaring log fire, nice coffee, lots of space, very quiet during the week, free wi-fi, friendly. I don't feel any pressure to buy drinks too often, although I'll probably stick to my 90 minute habit. I don't know why I didn't think of it before. The only problem is that it doesn't open until 11am and I imagine lunch time is a bit busier. Still, this is a success.

I love working in pubs. Just stick sternly to your 90-minute rule or you may be surprised by what you write.
