Dear Forumites,

How does re-applying for a post in a department that "stopped giving further consideration" to a previous application look like in Britain? In the States the consensus seems to be AFTDJ because so many factors may have changed since then that the outcome may very well be different this time. Thank you for your insights!

Is this a different job, or the same job re-advertised? If  it is the same position I would suggest reapplying, but with little hope. For a different job, things may have changed. On both counts, apart from a couple of hours what have you got to lose by applying?

We've had two situations where we've readvertised posts:
1) We didn't get any suitable candidates the first time around. We tweaked the advert the second time around in the hope of attracting different/better candidates.
2) Funding was pulled part way through the search, and then was subsequently re-granted in the next academic year. We were particularly annoyed about being messed around by senior management as we had a number of really strong candidates apply. We've only just re-advertised so don't yet know whether they'll re-apply

It's unlikely that you will know which one, if either of these, is the case for you so I'd also suggest applying.

I'm going to add to the consensus of AFTDJ, but with one caveat. If this is a re-advertisement of the same job, make sure that there's more on your CV than there was when your last CV hit the round filing cabinet.
