January 12: met 1. "Nick."  Rides the bus and reads.  Only 99 to go.

That one was easy!  Thanks, Zara!

Resolution Update at the moment:
I've had a rather bonkers travel schedule through many time zones. I've still managed to keep to resolution #1, which has been my focus for this month. I'm going to really focus on this one in the immediate future because most of my other goals fall into place when I do this.

How is everyone else doing?

Revised Resolutions:
1. Get up by 8am every day.
2. Work from 9-5 every day. (test this out to see if its realistic)
3. Joining local running group.
4. Listen to music every day.
5. Write for one hour every day except Sunday.
6. Work on both long term and short term deadlines.

Resolution update:
Social life:
1. I have gone to the movies twice with people other than or additional to my usual movie buddy.
2. I have gone out to eat four times with various friends.
3. I have hosted a small party at my house.
Reading books I don't intend to teach:
1. Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
2. Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy
3. Catching Fire

I'm pretty proud of myself.

So far, I am doing OK.

  • I have been to the gym at least four times a week, usually five
  • I am not bringing work home, but it is early in the semester and I have stayed late several nights
  • I have gone out to lunch twice each week and then a dinner out with the family.  I need to work on that one.

I like the idea of not complaining one day each week.  I may have to adopt that one as well as the following.
  • Go to the gym at least four days a week
  • Stop bringing work home
  • Eat out only one night a week

In 2012, I pledge/resolve/plan to

--run a half marathon and trim my 5k time down to 30 minutes.
--continue running and cross train on non-run days
--pack a lunch and ease off the bagels and soda (again!)
--keep trying semi-vegetarian recipes
--keep trying to "get a life." Even if it means my promotion application is weak.
--do more cycling, hiking

I'm doing OK on my resolutions:

--still training for the half.  I think the -30 minute goal for the 5k might've been too big a goal (from some research I've done).
--I'm going to the gym with a colleague 2x a week and we've been successful for 2 weeks now!
--I've increased my fruit/veggie intake from 2-3 to 5-6 servings almost every day.  "Breakfast salad" didn't really catch on, but breakfast smoothie with kale has.
--I've been munching on good snacks at work, so I haven't really packed a lunch, but I only ate out once (and that involved a bagel).  Tomorrow I'm going out for lunch.
--I signed up for adult group tennis lessons, which start in a couple of weeks.

Holy wow! You are a social insanity!

I made another person cry, possibly two (but I don't know for sure about the second one).

In my 31st year, which will begin in March, I resolve to:

- get a facial
- achieve Vrschikasana (http://yoga.about.com/od/yogaposes/a/scorpion.htm)
- be nicer to my students.  Maybe.
- get that grant and write that book
- stop being so g'd'ing snarky.  Maybe.
- stop complaining at my family.  They are the only one I have and I might as well make it work.
- develop a method to make leafy greens, which everyone says are so good for you, not taste like the ass end of a sweaty lumberjack.  Then, eat more leafy greens.

① Find out how ex_mo knows what the ass end of a sweaty lumberjack tastes like... On second thought, no.  I don't want to know.  We'll try again.

I know what I know, OK?

I got into shoulder stand this morning and was able to not fall over.  I'm also working the backbend pretty rigorously.  Next step is to attempt to combine them.  If you hear a large crash coming from the middle of the country, followed by cursing, you know it was me.

① Try to read less for pleasure, and spend less time on video games.  Replace this with time spent doing things that will have more productive outcomes; writing, grading, teaching, etc.

② Try not to sleep with any forumites, or anybody else except my fiancée.  Should be easy enough.

③ Continue to work on making life with my fiancée better.

So far, so good.  Still haven't read much for pleasure this year, and I have been grading more assiduously.  No sleeping with anybody but my fiancée, less video gaming, and I'm preparing a new course.

WILL walk, eat better, and do my physical therapy back exercises at least 3 times a week.

Im heading for a walk now.  I have been doing my back exercises most every day.  Im walking 30-40 minutes most days.

In the 'olden days' i would walk 4 times as far!  I hope to get back up to that level soon.

I think Ive lost 2 pounds, maybe 3.

I'm just checking in to note that so far in January I have written (and met or passed a very modest goal of 250 words a day) every day except one. And that despite plumbing disasters and dog having emergency surgery and needed much subsequent nursing.

*pats self on back*

Of course, I'm not doing so well with my other goals.

34 minutes, I think?  My first one ever was 37 minutes and that was in October.

Zarathustra -- I think you can get your 5K down to 30 minutes without any problems. Sounds like you're making really quick improvements. Keep it up!
