I was never a professor, just a lowly English-major-turned-filmmaker with very fond memories of my college days.  I wanted to make a movie about college, seen through the eyes of a professor.  And tenure seemed to be a good "way in" -- it gave me the drama necessary to construct a narrative around.  As my first feature, I'm very happy with the way it turned out.

So... thanks for talking about my movie.  It's always nice to know that people are watching and discussing it.  For those of you who enjoyed it, please spread the word!  For those of you who didn't, don't lose any sleep over it.  It's just a movie.  :)

Sincerely,

Mike Million

PS -- The Luke Wilson fans who were expecting Tenure to be "Old School 2" are the REALLY angry ones.  I'm not going anywhere near their forums.

If you stay around here, you can learn all about the tragedies, absurdities and comedies of academia.

I want to be played by Johnny Depp.

I think the real question is who will James Franco play?

Everyone else. He'll also enroll in two additional PhD programs.

I know, because he is my Celebrity Husband #5.

I did vet the script . . . with a tenure track assistant professor.

Classic.

I'm reminded of many a reply from students who relied on anecdotal data.  Or even a datum, and not one from anyone who had completed a process discussed.  ("My mother's cousin's boyfriend said that he once tried this, and he couldn't finish it, but I figured that he knew enough about it. . . .")

This explains the interesting resolution:  One year of tenure!  And they all lived happily ever after . . . for one year.

What a charming response from the writer/director!

I just watched this film, and can't believe it only got two stars on directv. I thought it was a charming little comedy! Sure, the hiring process as portrayed was ridiculous (Hi, I'm the head of the English department, and I just wanted to let you know that we just hired a new TT professor!) but who cares. I found the characters very appealing, and thought that the conclusion was great! Love teaching? Don't care about research? Fvck tenure!

Adorable. Four stars. It was much better than Cats. I'm going to watch it again and again.

I should remember to look for this one.  I think I could watch Luke Wilson do just about anything. To me he's like Fiona's James Franco.  Except that I'd cheat on him with J. Depp, given the opportunity.

Depp is mine.

Why settle for Depp when you can get who he's pretending to be?

Your professors were probably afraid of your galactic genius and did everything they could (behind the scenes) to thwart your hedginess.

So far the best movie I've seen touching the tenure issue is brothers Coen's A Serious Man - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1019452/ While it seems at first a bigger than life production, it turns out it's exactly the size of life.

I'm afraid I'll skip the one suggested by OP.

Tenure is an amazing film, and I agree it is worth more than 2 stars! It is a comedy, not a serious "take," but charming for academics nonetheless. :)
