Husband is at an R1 is one of the nicest areas of the country. We have the two body problem. Now he's been invited to interview at an R1 near us. Can he/should he mention family as one of the reasons that he would like to relocate?

Chances are they've already heard about this through the grapevine.

He can, but this should be secondary. The main reason he wants to go to the new R1 is because it is so fvcking awesome. He likes the programs, the students, the research facilities, the opportunities for collaboration--whatever white lie fits their image of themselves. That is the main reason he wants the job.  And oh yeah, he has personal ties to the area.

Thanks. It's true--he really likes the department as well as potential colleagues.

"So, why do you want a job here?"

"Because they won't give me a paycheck without one."

  "Because welfare sucks."

"It's part of my plea bargain deal."

"They said at Al-Qaeda training camp that it was important to get a job that looked really clean and respectable before I guaranteed my ticket to Paradise... Say, how far from <major government installation> are we, anyway?"

"Because I like to get to know my victims before I kill and eat them."

Start with the bottom reason, and work your way up.  Then go a little further in that direction, and you should be just about right.

Unfortunately, I think conjugate gives good advice.
