I would advise reading Farm Boy's posts in this section very carefully, and then doing the exact opposite of what he did.

Gee, it's flattering to think that I am the benchmark for success.

This really is the crucial issue. I am interested in hearing your answers to two questions:

1.) What is the overall hiring situation in your field? (IOW, do you have a real chance at getting a job once you're done?)

This is a little hard to answer, because I don't know what the situation is in similar and not-so-similar fields, so I don't know what to compare it to.  I'd say at this point, my chances aren't great -- a lot of people in my field don't go on to jobs in the field.  My best chance at employment in my field after I graduate is probably a post-doc.

2.) What is the placement rate for your particular institution? You mention a lack of faculty attention, which makes this a matter of some concern.

Actually, it's really good -- it's one of the things our institution is known for.  I know that seems given strange given the lack of faculty attention.  My guess is that our reputation is resting on laurels that it actually earned in the past, when faculty were more attentive.
