If I have an interview, yes. Or maybe even--dare I hope--several interviews! Possibly none, though.... so, maybe.

I never go anymore--it is an awful conference, poisoned by the job search, and the AHA is itself fairly useless. I did see that this year they brought in Dan Cohen and lots of digital history sessions, so things may be looking up. Do tell us how it went. And good luck to all the forumite job seekers who attend.

Wish I could meet up with forumites there, but I won't be attending. I agree with Larryc on the futility of the conference/organization. I was a member this past year, but only because I spaced out while trying to join the OAH. Man, was I angry about that one!

Best wishes on the job market, forumites.

If anybody needs a drink after their interviews - give me a holler.

Possibly.  I love the city and its opportunities for research.  But awaiting word on some scheduling conflicts that are possible as well.  And I am planning on the OAH nearby later in the semester, amid budget cuts. . . .

I may attend some panels. I would also be up for meeting people from here.

I'm going to be at ASSA, which takes place at the same time. Looks like this is a joint effort to take over Chicago! :)

The MLA was held there a few years ago and we all went to Uno's for deep dish pizza --- which takes a very long time to cook, but tasted *so good*! So make sure you have a free evening to go there and chow down.

There was a decent Mexican place near Uno's with good margaritas but I don't remember the name. Someone else should chime in with some good bar suggestions --- because food is the *important* part of the conference, right? And you will need to get a decent drink regardless of whether your interviews go well or not.

Ooh, and bundle up! It's so cold!

I am going solely to visit my mother who lives there. I can't understand why the AHA, always held in the first week of January, meets in a cold weather city. Chicago in January is miserable.

Oh yeah...that polar wind whipping of the lake, gaining velocity through the tall buildings, slamming into you and cutting through your clothes like an ice knife...  I remember.

I can't understand why the AHA, always held in the first week of January, meets in a cold weather city.

Because like it or not, warm cities are more expensive.
The AHA hotel in San Diego was more pricey than the one in New York, the previous year.

More pertinently, every time the AHA is somewhere warm or on the West Coast: NOBODY COMES. (Including 90% of the people who are always complaining "Why is it always in the Northeast, where it's cold?" People say they want it somewhere warm, but in fact vote with their feet by showing up in the "cold" cities).

So they keep holding it in the cities where they get a high turnout. These are cities like Boston, New York, Chicago. If they got record attendance in San Diego or Seattle, they'd hold it there more often.

Where are we talking about exactly? I could figure it out really quickly.
