CONFUSED AND SAD

« Reply #15 on: December 02, 2011, 03:34:21 PM »

We visited Portland in September for three nights.  We didn't use a car at all.  Everything was transit for us, mostly MAX trains.

Portland is amazing! A foodie's paradise, for sure, plus tons of things to do and see.

Voodoo donuts was open when we were there.
The highlights of our trip were:
Pine State Biscuits
Widmer Brewing
OMSI
Forestry Center
Hoyt Arboretum
Pizza Schmizza

And a few more of our faves--all within easy walking distance:

The classical Chinese garden
Saturday Market
Nob Hill
Pearl District

If you do decide to rent a car for a day to see a bit of the coast, you could do the Three Capes drive, which is spectacular. If you do that, you would go through Tillamook, with a possible tour of the cheese factory. The Tillamook Air Museum is pretty cool, too.

Last time I was in Portland, I took the light rail from the airport to a hotel near the Convention Center. It was cheap, and the light rail is free at night.

If I am looking at the right Embassy Suites, then you're within a couple blocks of a MAX station. You're fine. Don't rent a car.

You're also just down the street from Voodoo Donuts. Lucky.

It's the one on Pine St. What is Voodoo Donuts?

I modified my message -

Take the Red Line to Oak/SW 1st Ave MAX station. Your hotel is a 5 min walk from there.

That's the Red Line from PDX...

Voodoo Doughnuts...

Those are too cute!

The cream filled penis donut makes a lovely gift!

(Make sure you have cash if you go there.)

Every time I travel back and forth to Oregon, I stop at Voodoo donuts. If you are not one who likes gratuitous attention, make sure you bring a Target bag or something to cover the telltale pink box. They don't have bags at Voodoo. The comments will be coming in nonstop "Can I have one" "Oh, Voodoo!" "Cool, you have voodoo donuts!"

I love, love that place. I love Oregon in general, though.

A cautionary note - there are lots of panhandlers and homeless people in the city. This was the only discomfiting aspect of my Portland visit (in July, also for a conference).  Also, if you want to just blend in with the locals, dress way ... waaaaay casual. To cut down on luggage, I took only three outfits w/ me, and wore them in rotation everywhere. Even "science conference casual" made me feel conspicuously well dressed in public, and was probably a factor in attracting unwanted attention on the streets.

This is largely true of some parts of Portland. Downtown business attire is similar to Seattle. People want to believe that Portland is more laid back and funkier than it is. And, yes, just like Seattle, there are aggressive panhandlers. But compared with SEA or SFO, Portland's panhandlers are a lot more calm. I've never been followed into the street by an aggressive panhandler in PDX. SFO, on the other hand.....
