Having not heard from a school after accepting an offer from them makes me a bit confused. Should I ask or just wait?

You should ask. Was the offer in writing? Was your acceptance in writing?

Was the offer from someone on the SC and you are waiting to hear from HR with a contract? Or an initial call from HR and then nothing? If so, how long since you were offered the job? If it is a few days I would say it is worth waiting a little longer, but more than I week it might be helpful to contact someone from the SC (I would suggest either the person who made the job offer if s/he is not in HR, or the person listed as the department contact in the job ad if the offer came from HR).

I would suggest not calling/emailing today (Nov 30th) though - there is a national strike of many unions and you may or may not find someone willing to respond. Things should be back to normal tomorrow.

You needed to come here and be told that?  Perhaps they should retract the offer.

Yeah, maybe they should. And so I can apply for other positions too. Actually I am a bit shocked at how fast the general staff in the UK respond to emails (based on my experience of course). It can take up to 3-4 days to just reply to a simple inquiry. That's one reason I'm a bit reluctant of contacting them if not absolutely necessary, and the reason I preferred to asked here first too. This also puts me in doubt if UK (or this university) is really a place I would like to go.

I do not think that word means what you think it means.

Get going then.  And for the next application remember two things: (a) A delay in hearing from a place is not equivalent to a retraction.  (b) Show some initiative and contact the people, instead coming to whinge here.  OK?

So you can't just STFU if you dont have any constructive comments to give on this forum?

*snort*...

You've been mingus'd.... consider yourself a part of the group now. Mingus is the resident troll here in 'Academics in the UK'. We tend to just ignore him.

Which part of my advice did you have a problem with?  I'm just giving fellow tough love.  When he is older and wiser, he will thank me for it.

If you think about it, what wrote is quite constructive:

(a) A delay in hearing from a place is not equivalent to a retraction.  (b) Show some initiative and contact the people, instead coming to whinge here.

Sorry, I didn't sugar-coat it, but there it is.

I thought the advice was fine, if a bit blunt. I am one who often disagrees with mingus, and who doesn't tend to like tough love, either.
