Nasty brown envelope marked HMRC showed up in the post on Thursday.

When you haven't been gainfully employed since the end of July 2005, nasty brown envelopes usually tend to ask you to cough up some voluntary NICs. Or ask you whether you really should be filing a tax return.

<stares at envelope and goes to get a drink>

<drinks drink>

<opens envelope>

Yayyy! Tax refund!!!!

<puts brain back into gear>

Hang on! I haven't paid any tax since 2005!

<looks more closely at documentation>

Actually, it really is a tax refund from 2005.

It took you six sodding years to repay my PAYE????!!!! Bastards!

At least they gave me interest (not much mind you), and the cheque arrived this morning.

But, six years? That makes getting travel reimbursments out of S_E's place look quick!

This does not surprise me at all. They love taking your money, but getting it back is never easy!

Ah, but I didn't ask for it!

I now know about overpaying PAYE because it's calculated on a 12 month basis because of WH's job situation, but I didn't give it a thought back then. Maybe the buggers are actually honest?

No... not really honest... but they finally combined computer systems and lots of folks were owed money because of overpayments. A lot of folks owe money too... so be glad you were one of the folks who got some back!

Ha! They're a *lot* quicker about money that one owes, as WH found out last year.

Hopefully it won't take 'em six years to refund WH's PAYE if he gets canned on Wednesday, but I'm not holding my breath.

I got mine back within 30 days of sending in the form.
