SS, they can appoint you to committees but you don't have to always show up or to do anything outside the committee meetings. Show up every other time, catch up on emails while you are there, and make a polite excuse about how you won't be able to be at the next meeting but do hope to make the one after, or the one after that.

Larryc, I might do that.

I found out today that a request for a teleworking agreement (which would allow me to work remotely from a location that, for personal reasons, I visit frequently) was almost denied since the dept. head interpreted it as a slippery slope to leaving. When it was pointed out by cooler heads than mine that I've written twice as many papers and raised three times as many research dollars as others in my cohort, all while teaching twice as many new courses, there was begrudging assent, despite the fact that these agreements are common in our department.

I wish I hadn't known the circumstances of this. I feel like crying now.
