Cortez has a fantastic tasting menu-- shoot-- a quick google search says it's CLOSED-- oh no!
Slanted Door (it's at the Ferry Building) is great, as is Zuni Cafe (on Market)
I used to love Manora's-- but, haven't been there in a while;
Colibri-- best margaritas ever-- and fantastic tequila selection
Yank Sing for dim sum (make reservations, it's packed), and City View (also for dim sum, farther away from Moscone, but you can take a quick cab ride or bus over there, and the wait isn't insane)

I'm back from SF, but I had a terrific time there, and went to some superb restaurants. My favorite was this one. The best Indian food I've had. |

Rather than start a new thread, I thought I'd follow-upon this one. I'm attending a conference at the Moscone Center in SF, never been before, this summer and we're looking at staying at the Holiday Inn on 8th St (my roommate has it very cheap from rewards nights). How is the walk from there? Are Market, Mission or Howard St safe roads to walk especially at night? Also, are cabs readily available in the area?

Honestly, I do walk around there but I probably shouldn't. 6th St from Market down to Howard is about the worst part of SOMA, and you'd have to walk through that, but my friends live in a warehouse right there and I'm happy to visit them. I just don't walk on 6th. There are a lot of people in dire straits on the street.
Cabs aren't too hard to find, or you could take BART one stop.

BART in SF is pretty safe-- but, you can also take the muni-- it's easier from my perspective and they run all night. When we lived there we'd take the bus, muni-metro to wherever we were going and a cab back home-- SF is small so cab fares are reasonable.
