I'll be attending a conference in SF this weekend, and I'd love some recommendations for restaurants, and for cocktail bars with classic cocktails.
Lunch recommendations near the Moscone Center are also very welcome!

See this thread - most suggestions there are just a few BART stops from downtown. http://chronicle.com/forums/index.php/topic,83520.msg2008470.htmlAs for classic cocktails, there's Bourbon & Branch which requires reservations (it has this speakeasy schtick going, with a password at the door). It's in a pretty sketchy neighborhood but it is not, itself, sketchy in the least. There's also a good restaurant bar in one of the downtown hotels, The Fifth Floor in the Hotel Palomar, which is very good and upscale and yet the total opposite of the hipster places I'm more familiar with.

I've regularly attended a big conference in the Moscone Center, and there is a diner within 100 yards of the center (Mel's?) that's not bad. Generally, though, it's not easy to grab a quick lunch in that area.
The Thai Spice restaurant on Polk Street is pretty good, and not expensive. I'm not a real discerning diner, though. No matter what happens, I always end up eating at least one meal alone at the Carl's Jr. on Cyril Magnin. Sad, really...

Oh, and if you're grabbing lunches as opposed to going out with colleagues for a real sit-down meal, the food court in the Westfield Mall, a block from Moscone, is pretty darn amazing for a food court. It has outposts of a few legitimate restaurants. Yelp reviews, so you don't think I'm nuts: http://www.yelp.com/biz/westfield-san-francisco-centre-food-emporium-san-francisco

Aha. I was there last year. Just happened to stumble on this. Better than a crowded table at Mel's.

Lunch near Moscone is pretty spendy and usually packed with other conference attendees. The cafe associated with the MoMA is fairly nice, and the gourmet food court at the Metreon (right next to Moscone) is actually quite good, but it's worth trying to scurry a little farther from the immediate area if possible.
The thread cited above has great ideas in the Mission (a few Bart stops away) but I'll add the Taqueria Pancho Villa on 16h at Mission. Totally amazing burritos. Don't be put off by the security guard at the door.
A short walk (or cable car ride) into North Beach provides access to delicious Italian. Many people enjoy the Stinking Rose, in which everything is saturated with garlic, but I'm also partial to Michelangelo's where they give you free gummy bears at the end of your meal and provide you with a huge wheel of parmesan. I'm told that Tony's Pizza Napoletana is some of the best pizza in the world but haven't been there myself.

Some friends and I will be pressed for time for most lunches, so the Metreon and the Westfield Mall look like they will work for us. But we will be looking for fabulous restaurants for dinner, and great bars for cocktails, so this list (and Greyscale's post on the other thread!) is wonderful, and so welcome.

If you get over to Fisherman's Wharf - Pompei's Grotto has good seafood.

One night is definitely going to be "seafood night," so we might indeed end up in the Fisherman's Wharf area. Thanks, ST!

Last time I was there for a conference, I ventured out to this place: http://www.cha3.com/It was walkable from public transportation (though we took a cab back to the hotel) and was super fun. Great sangria and fun tapas (and very vegetarian friendly). We got the last seats at the bar - it's super popular.

Barbacco for dinner near Embarcadero. Comstock Saloon for drinks. Hog Island in the Ferry Building for seafood.
I also enjoyed Range.

You need to go to Martuni's. Go early to get a table and stay all night.

ps Stinking Rose is touristy and not very garlic-y, Mona Lisa is better, City Lights Bookstore is cool (and in the same neighborhood - North Beach), and Steps of Rome is good for late night dessert and wine and people watching.
Martuni's!

In SF as I type. Conference seems to be humming along with new arrivals tonight mixing with those of us who have been here a few days.
Breakfast this morning at the Grove; couldn't recommend it more. Lunch at a hole-in-the-wall mexican place four or so blocks north from the convention center (on 4th/stockton). Amazing fish tacos. IPA in aplenty
