Is there a way to book mark certain topics that you want to revisit later?  I know I can email them to myself but that can be a pain.  Thanks.

What do you mean?

You can use the notify feature to get updates on a thread to which you haven't posted.

You can use the "show all unread replies to posts" feature after you have posted to a thread and keep marking things unread to keep them accessible in that feature.

You can use the bookmarking feature of your browser to put a link to a webpage like all bookmarked webpages.

You can copy the URL of a thread into a text editor and keep a running list of threads that interest you as  regular text document.

If you just want the thread itself, then you can print it to a pdf or save it as HTML code wherever you like.

Do any of these things help you or are you thinking of something else of why you need to bookmark?

Just don't post in a thread "bookmarking for later". Those posts should all be removed by the mods, IMO.

I agree it's a big annoying.  But that's true of a lot of posts.  Any other reason?

OK.  Bacardiandlime, what should I do about a thread that I want to keep reading because it will be a continuing hot discussion for possibly a week or so, but don't have anything to say right this second?  Bookmarking that way means that one notification of the thread will show up in my new replies list at the time of the last post on the thread.  The notify function sends me a freaking email every time someone posts.

I check my new replies list when I log into these fora and am ready to read.  The email to which this moniker is attached is purposely one I only check once a week because of how many PM's and other random CHE tidbits I get (again, waiting to log into these fora for the PM's means that I see them when I likely have time to respond).

I suppose I could just think of something random to say that will give me a response, but doesn't contribute to the thread, either.  How do you feel about a simple "Great thread, X" or "Good ideas, everyone"?  Would you prefer a "I'm just here for the candy"?  What about "As usual, X is right on the money"?

I think of "bookmarking" as a truthful tossaway line, but if it so annoys you, I could be persuaded to switch to a different truthful tossaway line.  Let me know your preferences.

There is the old fashioned form of book marking, which is using your browser book mark or possibly Google or Yahoo! book marks.  That would enable you to keep track of the thread without littering it.

Uh-huh, and if you check my first post on this thread, then you would see I mentioned that possibility.

For those of us who use perhaps as many as five computers in a day, bookmarking one thing on one computer because someone might say something more useful later today is far more hassle than it's worth.

You are just going to have to live me sometimes putting a post on a thread just so that it will show up in my convenient list managed by the fora.

I think this thread is proof that we can argue about anything.  Which I don't think is bad!  I believe one my qualifying exam fields was "New Methodologies in the Art of Arguing for the Sake of Arguing."

And to be honest it never occurred to me, bacardi, that it might be annoying to other posters.  I don't know, I guess I thought it was kind of nice on one of larry'c recent threads that about a dozen people signed in just to bookmark -- it was a really great topic (the humane policies thread?).  Anyhow, I am happy to desist from such a practice myself -- I'll just think of something meaningless to say that everyone will ignore anyhow.

Amen. You are wasting the screen space for however many readers come after you for your own convenience. Use Ctrl+D, and sync your bookmarks if you are on multiple computers.

Is there a way to unfollow a thread, so it doesn't appear on one's list of Show New Replies to Your Posts?
