An interesting article in the Guardian

http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2011/nov/06/carlos-the-jackal-paris-trial

in which after an appreciative  discussion of their radical upbringing and his brother's career as a revolutionary, Carlos's brother makes this judgment regarding Carlos's capture in the Sudan and its aftermath:

"The circumstance of his kidnapping alone should render the whole process unconstitutional," he said.

I just read an article that mentioned the academic technique of "transcoding", which involves "leaping from one mode of analysis to another". This appears to be a good example of such practice is real life.

We exhausted all these discussions of this s***head's classification (revolutionary or terrorist) back in the 70s. Like bin Laden he was a spoiled rich kid who financed atrocities with his daddy's wealth, and pretended that the sadistic games he played to fend off the boredom of privilege were a form of freedom fighting.

They should have brought back the guillotine for him.  They still can. Then put it display in the 9th arrondissement, just outside the BNP Paribas building. - DvF
