Doing laundry (still)

« on: November 05, 2011, 02:33:42 PM »

Any recommendations for food in San Francisco, near City College (south end of the city, near Balboa park)? I've been in that area before and not had good luck finding good eats. We'll be driving, but close by and/or easy to get to is best.

Preferences:
-low to mid-priced (dinner)
-vegetarianish friendly
-authentic ethnic cuisine, or otherwise interesting
-hole in the wall is fine, but nice is ok too

I know I could google this, but it's so hard to narrow it down! I appreciate any suggestions.

I have always found chowhound or trip advisor good places to look for such recommendations.

Or Urbanspoon - I especially love their smartphone app.

Is Noe Valley too far? There's lots of tasty stuff over that way. I don't know the CC neighborhood at all actually.

Not much around there that I can remember, but 24th and Mission is only one or two BART stations away-- I can't remember what bus you'd take or if there's a metro there too.

There are a handful of ok places along Ocean Ave (the street that City College is on), but nothing that I remember specifically. Yelp is pretty reliable for rating them. You could also take BART one stop to Glen Park, where there are a few more yuppie-ish things, or two or three stops to the Mission which is full of all the amazing food ever.

MISSION FOOD (a small sampling):

My favorite burrito places:
Farolito's (highly rated hole in the wall at 24th and Mission; veggie friendly-ish but the tortillas always get a bit of meat flavor from the grill)
Papalote (24th just past Valencia; a touch more yuppie, but still classic, and VERY veggie friendly - try the tofu mole burrito)
Pancho Villa (16th between Mission and Valencia)

Midrange:
Cha-ya vegan sushi + Japanese, on Valencia (vegan. don't be startled by the lack of fish.)
We Be Sushi cheap sushi
Dosa (South Indian)
Pauline's Pizza (yuppie thincrust)
Little Star Pizza (deep dish)
Monk's Kettle (wide beer selection)

Mid-to-upscale:
Blowfish Sushi (odd anime while you eat)
Beretta (amazing cocktails)
Pizzaria Delfina
Spork
Mission Local Eatery (upscale)
Universal Cafe (upscale)

Amazing:
Flour+Water (good luck getting a table...)
Commonwealth

There's also this place Mission Chinese Food that is very very very good, I'm told, and sort of an odd hipster in-joke.

These are good recs.  I've had good luck at Flour + Water early on weekdays.  Humphry Slocombe is a couple blocks away and has great ice cream.

Mission Chinese is outstanding and well worth the trip.  Best Chinese food I've ever had by far.  Sourcing on the meat is good and most of the dishes use just a little meat to bump up the flavor, plus they're willing to turn most of them vegetarian.

Noe Valley looks reasonably close (about 3 miles, I can manage that). What's good there?

Essentially all the restaurants in Noe are along 24th Street, and it bumps into the Mission.

Firefly is good. (Upscale/pricey.)
