I am thinking of moving to London, preferably near Paddington because of my work commute. I'm single and I'd rather live alone if possible. I'm not sure where to start with looking or what to expect in terms of prices. Any suggestions?

Have a look at www.findaproperty.com and www.rightmove.com

For the general Paddington area, you should probably also include Maida Vale, Warwick Avenue, and Bayswater.

However, the phrase "hideously expensive" springs to mind. I wouldn't expect to find a one bedroom at anything less than £1,200 a month. If you're thinking of buying, anything under £300,000 will either be tiny or ex-council (and quite possibly both).

I was afraid you were going to say something like that!

Does anyone have any suggestions on roommate situations?

I currently live outside of London but am fairly new to the UK. I'm hoping to move into London because I'm single and hoping to have a more active social life if I move back to a big city.

Thanks for the help!

As silly as this might sound... you can make really good friends, not just find romantic partners, with things like Match.com

Findaproperty.com and Zoopla (mentioned above) both allow you to search for roommate and flatshares as well--you should look into that.

For flat sharing, www.moveflat.co.uk is probably the best.  I live in London and I found my current place, and subsequent roommates, there.  A lot of the other sites have a lot of fake adverts.

Thanks for the suggestions. This is really helpful! I also appreciate the suggestions for how to meet more people. I'll certainly follow up on that while I'm sorting out moving possibilities!
