New administrator here. We're an AACSB-accredited business school and we lost a key faculty member. He taught a specialized online course that I need to offer in the Spring so that students can graduate. We have no informal contacts who could teach the course. I thought about advertising in the "normal" recruiting channels, but it seems unlikely that the kind of person I'm looking for is looking there. Any ideas?

Thanks,
Al

Call HR offices of companies that do this specialized work. Ask for recommendations.  Interview like crazy.

I think that networking would be the most fruitful approach, and this problem give you a good rationale to expand your network.  If you are a new chair or program director (?), this would be the time to connect with your counterparts at other near-by schools with business programs.  If the AACSB has a state/regional chapter, then you may want to contact the local leadership and ask for suggestions of who to contact.

For what it's worth,  I think most business department faculty should be able to teach about half the business curriculum in a pinch, assuming they have doctorates.  Usually, there are people more in the "soft side" like OB and others the "hard side" like stats and econ.  I think just about everyone should be able to teach the strategy course, which typically comes at the end.

What is the subject, and what are you paying?

Our admin people think that there are boatloads of qualified people ramming the door down to teach for $3000 a term, and online would be a bonus (they think) since they would not have to come to campus 'as often'.

If you dont want to answer, then make the call to the deans and department chairs in your state.

(One solution our university had for the budget problems of a few years ago was to put administrators back in the classroom for 1 class each.  After that, though, the administrators wont take that bait again... Those who can, do.  Those that can not, teach, those that can not teach, become administrators).
