Folks, Any idea how the budget situation is at NSF this year? The reason I ask is because I got a reply from my program manager saying that my proposal is on hold and that they are hoping to fund it, but the final decision would take a while. Perhaps, I didn't make it to their first round of funding, and I'm put on the waiting list for the second round (am I being too optimistic?). Anyone else in a similar situation?

Well, I don't know what's going on, but if fastlane's status updates are current my proposal was only sent for review last Friday. I'm holding out hope that the date is incorrect, but otherwise... wow.

Strange, it seems a bit late in the cycle for a CAREER proposal to be sent out for review.

Could the delay be because of the funding climate? Maybe PO got word about budget late? What is the duration of a panel review? Anyone know? Anxiously waiting here.

It's a few years ago now, but I didn't hear until mid-late March that mine was funded. These grants are often funded out of the same funding pool as "regular" proposals, so it can take some time for a program officer to work out the necessary deals to swing funding. No news is usually good news -- it can mean they are trying to fund you. Good luck!

I guess most of the CAREER awards for this year are already been announced or the PIs of successful proposals have already been notified by PO. I dont sound like discouraging but the odds are that your proposal is declined and they are taking time to decline it "officially". Since it is already more that six months, you can probably ask the PO about your proposal status. Here is typical timeline of CAREER proposal., Submission: July 2011 (fastlane status pending) If funded, PI gets happy phone call from PO: Nov-Dec 2011 (fastlane status still pending). If funded, proposal status changes to "recommended": Jan-Feb 2012 If funded, award gets processed by DGA and institution is notified of the award: Feb-March, 2012 If declined, proposal status changes from "pending" to "declined": Jan-Feb 2012.

Well, in addition to mine saying it is in peer review as of 2/3, the program manager sent me two proposals to review, one on that same day. That would be rather mean if rejection were already inevitable. I've heard rumors that this division has panels at the end of the month, so hopefully this might explain both the delay and sudden review requests.

Have you heard anything from the PO? My PO mentioned my grant was recommended for funding in Jan. However, I haven't heard anything since then. If you've heard that much, then I would hold tight (that's what senior colleagues are telling me, anyway). :-) But, I'm not 100% sure!

I think you'll be ok. No, I have not heard anything from PO. I guess patience is the key thing here.

I'm still waiting over here, too. No changes on fastlane since 2/3.
