A friend of mine and I are thinking about going to Scandanavia in November for a weekend break and also to try to catch the Northern Lights. However, we want to be based in a location where there's plenty to do if it snows (or rains!) the entire time.

Any ideas?

Hang on. Don't you get them already? You're more than far enough north, no?

Failing that. Although I haven't been there myself, I have a multiplicity of friends who say that Trondheim is wonderful.

Reykjavik? Sometimes you can see them right there in the middle of town, and then of course there are excursions to the nearby countryside. And it's a neat city. Or, town. Well, capital. Anyway, a neat place.

I've been to Trondheim, and it is gorgeous.  I'd expect however that by November the place would be seriously cold.  And possibly rainy, it rains a lot in Trondheim.  - DvF

I saw them from Ft. Lewis, WA (Tacoma) once.  Wonderful.

I've seen them twice in New England.  The second time we pulled off at a rest area to watch, and were amazed that no one else noticed them or pulled over.  An amazing sight--I can only imagine what they're like in northern Scandinavia.

The paper in my old hometown in the middle south had pictures last week of the northern lights-- they have been visible that far into the States lately

My Yooper relatives have been posting pictures of the Northern Lights on FB. I admit I was surprised that you could see them in the lower 48; I thought they were only visible in Alaska.
