Usually about one percent of the administrative job is personnel, yet this one percent can eat you up for the ninety-nine percent of your wakeful hours.

(The Bully is doing it since the stake is so low)

The next time he is verbally abusive, say "Stop.  I have been advised not to allow you to speak to me in that way.*  When you compose yourself, if you want to continue this discussion, email me to request another meeting.  Please leave now."  Turn to your computer, pick up some grading, make a phone call, etc., to indicate that the conversation is over.  Do not look at or respond to him in any way, no matter what he says or does.  If he creates a situation that you can't ignore, simply repeat the above.

It will take some discipline to do this, and he will surely test you by continuing to speak.  It would be best to have a witness within earshot.

*Actually, this sentence should usually be "I do not allow anyone to speak to me in that way," but since she already has, that would sound silly.  Plus, the "I have been advised" adds a bit of an ominous tone and might make him think, "did the Dean tell her this?  does she have a lawyer? who does she have on her side?"

I don't deserve these self-entitled students.

I see Gekko's point.

Of course you do! Because nothing says "small sail used for sailing off wind" than agreeing with a small reptile.

Nothing says 'whistling dixie' like pretending tenure system doesn't have a downside.
