I think the type of contact depends on the type of student. If you asked a freshman, it is likely they would reply with 'more lectures'.
By contrast, in my final-year modules I had low attendance for my lectures (and it wasn't just me - the pattern was repeated across everyone's modules). I changed my teaching this semester so that my final year modules only have 'mini-lectures' integrated into a more interactive workshop. (Hopefully not tempting fate), it went well last week, and one student said she was glad not to have to sit through a 1 hour lecture. She said "It feels more grown up" debating in seminars rather than "being lectured to". More experienced students have obviously gained their intellectual independence by then, and are seeking more active teaching styles.
