Chime on the safety of the Quarter and NoLa in general.

If she's into music at all, and she has time, she should know that VooDoo is this weekend.  Snoop Dog, yo.

I love New Orleans.

I'm a short, young woman and I've travelled and lived there alone.  I was never hassled but I think what was said about walking "purposefully" at night is always good advice (probably in almost any city or town).

I understand not wanting to be out at night but it'd be a shame i she didn't get to see at least a little live music.  Some shows may be earlier in the evening.  For early eveining shows, she could try Preservation Hall, Palm Court, or Snug Harbor.  Really, though, for the best music Frenchmen Street is where it's at and walking to there through the Quarter should be no problem at all.

Frenchman is great and there are fantastic places to see music there, but the walk between Frenchman and the Quarter made me a little uneasy.  The streets were deserted and it was a darkly-lit residential neighborhood.  Maybe I would have felt safer if I hadn't been walking with a baby at the time, but I'd suggest that she take a cab rather than walk it (or at least not walk it alone).

It's true that it's residential, but it's not high-crime in that area at all.  I concur with what was said earlier--sadly, much of the NO crime rate is due to intraracial crime in low income areas, often drug related.  Though there are parts of NO I wouldn't want to walk alone at night (parts of the Treme and the 9th ward).  Vaughn's is a fun club for great music but that's a place I've always taken a cab or car to.

I would totally walk to Frenchman St. from the Quarter.

(But, I've been known to be a little clueless/careless in New Orleans. When I first moved there in the early 90s, not a safe time, I seemed to spend much of my time driving/walking past the projects.)

I had a strange experience in a cab. I was at that Marriott, came out and had to get to a dinner on one of those boats-I believe it was the Creole Queen. It was pouring rain when I came out of the hotel. I know the boat was nearby but I was late and had no umbrella with me-so I got a cab. I had just arrived in the city, and had never been there before and so really had no idea where the boat dock was-but knew it was closeby. I got in the cab and the guy said it was kind of far. I repeated that it was the big boat that was nearby, etc. He acted like he'd never heard of this boat. We drove to the end of the street and he starts down this off road kind of place down beyond the docks, by some warehouses, with road getting narrower and going behind warehouses. There were cops up ahead. They stopped him, looked in, and since there was some kind of party in one of the warehouse things up ahead, they let him through. I still had no idea that long ago we passed the large boat at the large dock. I decided this did not look good for me as the roadway became darker and more isolated. I wondered whether to jump out of the car, but by then there was nothing around in this area. Luckily, a couple appeared in the road. They had come from the warehouse party thing, were walking along, seemed kind of drunk and asked the driver if they could get in. He let them in, and then we started back toward the main city. I then saw the big boat-just down the street from the Marriott where I started out. I told him to stop the car and got out. He said nothing this whole time-even when I asked him where the boat was-except "I don't know." I am not sure what was going on, or was going to go on. When I saw that giant boat thing, I knew there was no way the guy did not know it was there and took me on an off road drive behind warehouses. I was very happy that that couple appeared, that's for sure.

Cab drivers had a reputation for robbing tourists before Katrina, and the cops weren't to be trusted.

But maybe things have changed.

Longtime lurker here.

I was in NOLA for a conference last spring and took a cab the evening I arrived from the airport. The driver insisted on picking up his teenage daughter from a school event before taking me to the Marriott on Canal, even when I protested. It was off the highway in a residential area several miles from the French Quarter. I'm a woman, 5'2, and look younger than I am. I don't spook easily, but I was very unhappy. I would have reported him if I hadn't lost the piece of paper with his cab number on it.

I'm a much bigger fan of Super Shuttle (or, if it's convenient, public transportation) than I used to be.

Do NOT walk between the tourist-populated area of the Quarter and Frenchmen Street at night unless you are in a large group of people.  Please see my earlier post.  I honestly do know what I am talking about here.  Visit New Orleans, love it, come back often, but there are a few rules that must be followed for the sake of safety, and the walk from the tourist heart of the Quarter to Frenchmen Street takes you through quiet, relatively empty residential streets, until you get up to Esplanade, and there are a fair number of muggings (and even shootings/cuttings) over there on a regular basis, for the very reason that the criminals know that unsuspecting tourists wander over to Frenchmen Street from the busier part of the Quarter.  Yes, most crime is drug related, but that particular area is known for tourist muggings/attacks.  I read the crime report in the paper every day - I'm not pulling this out of my ass.  Now if you are in a large group, then it is no big deal, and you should stop at Port of Call on Esplanade for a really good burger on your way over to Frenchmen Street.  But that's a group of 5+.  If you are by yourself or with just one or two other people, just go to one of the hotels like the Monteleone or Jackson Square and grab a taxi.  And you definitely shouldn't walk to Vaughn's, although it is worth a taxi ride if Kermit Ruffins is playing on a Thursday night!
