My daughter just started her Political Economy program there,  and so far it is far more impressive than the semester she spent at the University of Illinois at Chicago. But I don't believe that her program falls into Arts and Sciences....

I believe the OP is referring to the fact that a number of Arts and Humanities faculty were forced to reapply for their own positions last year.

From best I can tell, things have calmed down considerably since last year. Part of this general calming probably had to do with the substantial increase in students applying and being given admission. This is the last year to avoid the recently passed higher fees and as a result colleges and universities around the UK (at least England and Wales) have had a huge increase in applications and admissions. The further result of that is that every department looks pretty busy at the moment. However, once higher fees kick in, there will probably be a drop in the number of entering students. It will be interesting to see whether the higher fees will deter so many students that the situation will get worse, or whether the decline in students will be offset by the higher fees. As such, it is actually difficult to tell right now what the long term outlook will be for any UK school (except the Oxbridge system). Still, it is unlikely that the general upheaval of last year would be attempted again for some time at KCL.
