I would appreciate it if anyone working in Australia or familiar with Australian university would tell me if the University of Western Sydney is a reasonably good university to start a career with? Is it competitive to get in?

The position I saw is a lecturer position. From the ad, I would say this position values teaching at least as much as research. From wiki, I knew this is a new university (established in 1989) that has multiple campuses. Looking at the funding data from ARC, there are about 20 universities that come before this university in terms of research funding.

My personal goal is to have a stable career, ideally combining research and teaching. Positions involving heavy or only teaching duties are not very desirable for me.

Any comments will be greatly appreciated, especially from a personal perspective.

In my opinion, there are two excellent universities in Sydney - University of Sydney and University of New South Wales - and while UWS isn't in their league, it is a good, solid university.

The teaching versus research expectations will vary by department, I suspect.

There have been quite a lot of jobs posted for UWS in the last few months - it seems exciting!
