the great vampire squid round the face of humanity

« on: September 21, 2011, 03:55:26 AM »

Link here -- a very nice article, though the final sentence is annoying.

I like how he turns the "why are you a vegetarian" question around:
Quote
Imagine the alternative, rarely posed, question: "Why are most Americans not vegetarian?" One would have to be an ideologue of the highest order to hear that as a question about dietary choice. Surely that question invites a discussion of agricultural subsidies, USDA regulations, public-school financing, and corporate lobbying.

If I were king, I wouldn't hesitate to remove the meat option from the realm of consumer choice.

I support vegetarianism, but this article is fairly dull, as is the whole realm of virtuous food politics.

I think a lot of this stuff is written by people who really don't enjoy food and who are lacking in the zesty taste buds that are needed for one of life's great pleasures.

Pizza or punishment? I choose pizza.

If you oppose the big meat industry then you can stick with small time producers or raise your own food.  Do like Ted Nugent and eat only the meat you kill from hunting.

I can see eating vegetarian for most meals but I would not want to give up the chance to eat so much good food from around the world.

Does this mean it is more exciting and tasty to be unethical about food?

You know you can get vegetarian pizza, right?

I love to cook, and I love to eat; I also happen to be vegetarian.Vegetarianism need not suggest grim denial: for a recent, wonderful example of the abundance of amazing choices for foodies, check out Yotam Ottolenghi's new cookbook, Plenty.

Whoever thinks that vegetarianism involves deprivation needs to visit my friend Pat's blog.

It's here:
http://vegandebauchery.blogspot.com/

OM NOM NOM!

Pat's an ultrarunner and a vegan, and he loves to make pizza.  Pat currently holds the world record for most miles in 24 hours on sand.

Double post - but I missed the window.

It is not difficult to raise vegetarian children.  I hope he doesn't chicken out on that.

I love food. I am a strict vegetarian. Seriously, I love, love, love food (my waistline proves it). We're raising a strict vegetarian kid too. We make really good pizza.

I choose not to talk about what I eat with people because I'm not into defensive omnivore bingo:http://vegansaurus.com/post/254784826/defensive-omnivore-bingo but it would just be wrong and a lie to say vegetarians can't be foodies.

I just sent that to my SO, who is vegetarian, because he gets those all the time.  He never, ever brings up his vegetarianism unless asked, and can almost always find something to eat at an restaurant or party, so he never complains.  But when people about him it and he answers them, it's astonishing to watch people's reactions.  I've even had people play that bingo with me after they've asked me about his vegetarianism.

He's also a foodie and we eat well. VERY well.

I love the smell of napalm in the morning.

Is it organic, vegan, gluten-free, fair trade napalm?

I love the smell of napalm in the morning.

Is it organic, vegan, gluten-free, fair trade napalm?

Is it free range, or has it been enslaved to the capitalist machine?

I LOVE that bingo thing!  Too cute.  We're a vegetarian household, and planning to raise a veggie kid, and it really freaks people out.  I generally just don't mention it, because we do get a lot of these responses.
