Tends to have warped sense of humor

The article is a tale of a man and his library.  I was struck by it.  I recommend it to anyone who, like me, loves books more than is good for them or their budget.

Unfortunately, I think conjugate gives good advice.

Thank you, conjugate, for posting.  I haven't made it through the whole narrative yet, but I look forward to finishing the article.  I confess I do not check the chronicle's offerings every week to see what's there, but it is a relief to see this article by Dorfman.  It's a bit surprising to me that more writers of his stature do not appear more often in this publication.

I found it sadly amusing when our library unveiled its new web page . . . and there was no link to the book catalog.  Just links to electronic databases, etc.  Some librarians are going crazy.

Abigail, I'm sure if there's someone out there, looking down on us from someplace else in the universe, they're wise enough to stay away from us.

How many writers of his statue consider themselves as much academics as writers? How many are employed in academia?

I do have a complaint about this essay: I sent out an article on Dorfman last week :(

Bumping this up because I like it better than the knife-pulling Texas employee whose story got stuck at the top of this CHE section.

I just gave the piece a quick read, and I found it pretentious and pedantic. It's filled with the same sort of handwringing and "the tables were turned once again!" melodrama one finds in the First Person job search columns.

Though I respect the author's political activities and have many friends who have gone through the exile/refugee experience, he should have donated his library to whomever could have made it available to local Chileans.
