For late 19th century-early 20th century fiction on U.S. women's history, Helen Hooven Santmyer's And Ladies of the Club -- historical fiction not about elites and big cities but about a small-town movement that was misunderstood and neglected by historians for too long.

I read the Santmyer book during a summer when I was in college in the mid-80s.  I loved it so much that I still remember it well!

I'm so glad to know that it's not just me; thanks!  This work of fiction informed my work in history as much as did many scholarly works.

It's so interesting - this book informed me, as well. I am very lucky - my mother-in-law lives in Xenia, where Helen Hoover Santmeyer grew up and spent most of her life. You can see her house, one block from Main Street. Living history!

I know that this thread is a bit zombie-like, but I just began Prophecy by S J Parris, set in Elizabeth I's court, and it's pretty good so far.

I didn't like it too much either. Made me a little hesitant about Caleb's Crossing

I have a copy of Caleb's Crossing, and I am hesitant as well.  If I try it soon, I will let you know if you should skip it, too.

I thought March was meh. (Leave Alcott alone!) Haven't been tempted to read any Brooks since.

To be fair, it's mostly the ending that was terrible. The novel would have been quite good without those weird last 30 pages or so.

I LOVED People of the Book, and have been waiting for one of her novels to be that good. March and Year of Wonders just didn't do it for me.

I respectfully disagree.  The entire book was that "medieval herbalist witchy women are feminists and cool" predictable dreck.

I'm a feminist, but this is twaddle, not respectable historical fiction.  William Vollmann writes respectable historical fiction.

Excellent.  I'm slowly moving up the library's elist.  By the time you're done, I may get notice that it's my turn!

(Really, I get the sense that a lot of people don't get that they can return ebooks when done, not wait out the weeks.  Then again, it may be that not everyone reads -- read, devours -- books as fast as I do.)
