Hi, all.  As I posted on the inhaling thread, my sister gave me a Kindle as a late birthday present (best sister ever).  I went looking for threads about book recs on the Kindle in this forum, but the latest one I found was last replied to in 2009:  http://chronicle.com/forums/index.php/topic,54399.0.html

On August 30th, I leave the country for a five-day trip to Canada to be in my best friend's wedding.  I'll love to just bring my kindle and not any heavy books this time for plane and downtime reading!  Anyone have any newer recs?  I like sci-fi, fantasy, mystery, lesbian/gay fiction, certain YA, and non-fiction on science (especially biology, but not evo psych) and other topics.  Cheap is also good!

Sci-Fi: I very much enjoyed Connie Willis and her time-travelling Oxford Historians: Doomsday Book; To Say Nothing of the Dog; Blackout; and All-Clear (the last two are not some much a novel and a sequel as 1 massive novel split into two)

I liked the following:

Back on Murder, by J. Mark Bertrand (was a free promo book)
Pattern of Wounds, by J, Mark Bertrand
The Hangman's Daughter, by Oliver Pötzsch, Translated by Lee Chadeayne
Hello Kitty Must Die Must Die, by Angie Choi
Calafia's Daughters, by Leigh Richards

There is also a lot of YA fantasy and a lot of sci-fi on the promo book list, but I have no idea on the quality.

I love Connie Willis - and hadn't read all of Blackout/All-Clear yet - thanks!

Thanks for those recs! <grins>

Depending on your tastes in SF, there's plenty available for the kindle. If you've not tried them before, I recommend The Atrocity Archives and The Jennifer Morgue by Charles Stross. If you like those, there's a third in the series (The Fuller Memorandum) already out and the fourth has just gone to press.

On the YA front, I've just devoured Robin McKinley's Pegasus and I have an ebook of Dragonhaven on my iphone, but I can't see either in the US kindle bookstore. The best YA book I've read over the last year or so was Megan Whalen Turner's The Thief -- and if you like it, there's three more in the series.

Good YA/SF:  Screwing Up Time by C. M. Keller.  $2.99 for Kindle.

Simon Green. He's a very enjoyable writer.

His recent series is a SciFi/Fantasy parody of several Bond movies. He also has the Nightside series that's a nice mix of detective and SciFi/Fantasy. Or, if you're so inclined, he has the Deathstalker books that are a quite funny "Space Opera" set of works.

I'll also tag onto The Thief- I didn't realize there were any more than 2 books in the series, though- I'll have to check it out.

Kevin Hearne is a new author- he's got a 4 book set the Iron Druid chronicles that are quite good.

If you like the oldies-but-goodies, check out the free books from Amazon.  Dunsany's Fifty-One Tales are short little vignettes; lots of old Andre Norton and H. Beam Piper are free; and quite a few other authors from the '50s and '60s are reasonably priced.

I've downloaded 20 or so free titles myself in the last few days.

Unfortunately, I think conjugate gives good advice.
