Unlike LarryC, I wouldn't go to Mars (2 year trip each way with current technology), but I will fly anywhere in the US or Canada.

As no places between US/Canada and Mars exist? ;-)

Depending on the time of the month, I suppose the Moon could exist as a reststop between the US/Canada and Mars.  Otherwise, nope, no places exist between US/Canada and Mars. ;)

I have, however, had a lovely time in Europe because more places than the US/Canada and Mars exist.  However, I will not go to some places in Europe, but I can't think of anywhere in the US or Canada that I wouldn't go.

OK, you are right! So lets choose the right time and organize a conference on the Moon then.

Hmmm.   Do you suppose the Oxford Roundtable people would have ideas?  <very old interthreaduality>

I'm about to travel 4000 miles for a brief conference in an uninteresting place in which I am not presenting in any way and where the funding is coming from my own pocket. Sometimes you do some professional activity simply because it is part of being active in your field.

As for ST's specific situation, anyone even vaguely connected to the Earth sciences should experience the caldera on the Big Island of Hawaii at least once. - DvF

At this point in my career, I wouldn't drive an hour to present a poster.

If I submit something to a conference, and it is accepted (in any form), then I will feel obligated to attend.

Why? I guess this is going to be one of those disciplinary things. I think we have gone through before in fact....

I can think of some conferences where everyone except the handful of keynote folks will be giving posters.  "Only" giving a poster in that case means one is normal.

The American Physical Society March Meeting poster sessions are where all the polymer people hang out.  People travel from all over the world to play meet, greet, and discuss at the poster session.  The choice of poster versus talk in that case is made more on whether one wants a lot of discussion spread over three hours or whether one wants to do a ten-minute "read my paper" advertisement with time for possibly two questions.

A poster isn't necessarily lesser; a poster is necessarily different.

Unlike LarryC, I wouldn't go to Mars (2 year trip each way with current technology), but I will fly anywhere in the US or Canada.

If that's the case, then OK, but in my fields poster sessions are always an afterthought/add-on to the main event if they exist at all. So being relegated to a poster is an insult for a senior person in those fields, IMO.

Yes, at some conferences, a poster might as well not be given (someone here years ago mentioned the joys of giving a poster included playing cards with the adjacent people).  However, that's not always the case and I like people in the cheap seats to know that a variety of things exist; check with people who know about your particular conference to get the facts before being insulted.

heck, I'd go anywhere with my poster if money were no object. As it is, I wouldn't go beyond driving distance for a poster, as I have little travel money.
