Finally decided to hand in my letter of resignation as an adjunct. Absolutely loved teaching at the school but got tired of feeling underpaid and under appreciated. Felt like I was just a pawn in the administrative money machine. Great that administration makes six figures and us lowly adjuncts don't even make enough to survive. Tired of playing their game.

Thank you larryc. Even when you are treated poorly, it can be hard to leave.

I hope a time will come in this country when adjuncts get more employee rights from the institutions they serve. I feel that we have allowed it to happen and only a concerted effort can change the tide.

The difficulty is what type of concerted effort that would be. I encourage my program to have full-time positions rather than adjuncts, but we are also strapped for money and many excellent people are willing to work for almost nothing due to the state of job opportunities for Ph.Ds. What to do? We've literally had people volunteer to teach for free just to have it on their CV. It is sad.

Teaching for free- now that's a concept! It is pretty sad that the market has deteriorated to the state that it has. So many of us have looming student debts from our own educations, that we hardly have a hope of paying them off with with adjunct positions many of us find ourselves perpetually stuck in (let alone volunteer positions). For some, adjuncting can be just for fun and a way to make a little extra income on the side, but most of us (I sense) do not have that luxury and it becomes a dead-end street with no real hopes of becoming sustainable employment. While I did resign from one school, I am continuing to teach at another where I feel that I am treated with more respect and professionalism.

Undesirable job situations do provide one thing: that nice feeling when you quit. Enjoy it and your new freedom.

Great comic! So true it is! I hope we have a revolution in academe one of these days where the professors are making more than all the admins. Love to see admin teach all the classes!

I think we often underestimate our power as professors. If we could only better organize, we could change the world of academe in a heartbeat! Let's give all the administrators part-time jobs and pay them $10k/year. Soon, they will be willing to work for food!

I don't deserve these self-entitled students.

Not exactly. Organizing requires time, money and risk. And putting administrators on poverty wage is not the goal.
