Oh, and according to him, " I'm white and male. I've been told to my face not to bother applying for some positions because of my gender and race." Has anybody here actually had this happen to them?
I'm so tired of this one. Look, I'm willing to accept that there might be some places where such things happen. But not all universities, nor all English departments, are the same, and as I said upthread, this idea that "English" is the same everywhere is just dumb. My own department hires about 50/50, which pretty much reflects the PhD pool. We do indeed hire white males, along with white females, and women and men of colour too.
What we don't hire, though, are people with obvious, huge chips on their shoulder.
