Posting for my son, who is 17 and considering this for phimosis.  Any experiences that forumites can share re: this? He was on-board with doing with (as was urologist) but got some scare stories from one person.  Anyone with primary experience with this, who wants to share, will be most appreciated.

I had a friend who was circumcised as a teenager. It was kind of a rough road, though I don't have any details. That friend has passed on, too, so I can't ask him.

My husband's uncle was circumcised as a teenager for medical reasons (I have no details). From what I gather, the recovery was excruciatingly painful. That is the one tidbit passed into the family lore from a procedure done in the 60's. I would hope that modern medicine offers better pain control. Sorry I can't help more.

What might help your son is to get more details about when and why the procedure was done on the one person who scared him. Was the doctor incompetent? Was the underlying medical cause more severe?

I suspect this may be the male equivalent of labor/delivery stories some women feel a need to share. Rather than offering support and a "you can do this" cheer, some individuals like to drag out the most frightening cases to share with the mother-to-be. If that is the case, you might introduce your son to this unfortunate aspect of human nature and remind him that doctors familiar with his case should be trusted above untrained individuals who simply want to swap horror stories.

Worst case scenarios rarely happen.
