Spousal Unit and I are not getting any international travel in this summer, due to a variety of circumstances, so I'm rather thinking we should go over the Christmas break. Is it stupid to go to Paris between Christmas and New Year's?  Should we think of somewhere else in France? Or perhaps just head to Rome?

If Paris is a good idea, suggestions on where to stay and eat would be great.

Wot? No Wall or Offa's Dyke Path? Bummer.

Paris is notorious for shutting down over Christmas. As is most of Europe. Check very carefully that you will be able to eat and drink!

Rome will be wet, but a lot warmer than Paris.

Paris is beautiful at Christmas.  I didn't notice things shutting down.

Both Rome and Paris are nippy in December.  Both are pretty.   Christmas week can be fairly quiet.  Plane tickets fall very low just after Christmas, so if you can hold out for the beginning of January, it's worth it.   (That's also when sales happen too.)

It may close over the holiday, but I stayed in the Fiap Jean Monnet in mid-December 2008.  It always gets described as a hostel, but it is really more like a budget hotel.  I had a private room with double bed and en suite bathroom for €50 per night.  The room was a bit spartan, but quite and clean.  For the price, what more could you ask?  Restaraunts and the metro are a short walk away.

A better bet for finding places to eat is Rue Moufftard behind the Pantheon in the Latin Quarter - it is off the beaten tourist track and filled with small, relatively cheap restaurants.

I spent some time in Rome between Christmas and New Years a couple years ago; it was great! Everything will still be decorated for Christmas until Epiphany on Jan. 6th., so it's a good place to keep the holiday spirit going!

One of our editors JUST posted on an inexpensive place to stay in Paris: http://www.wanderingeducators.com/accommodations/short-term/visiting-paris-cr-me-br-l-e-shoestring.html (and a cheap place to eat!)...

We also know Gail at Perfectly Paris, which offers short-term rentals. I'd be happy to put you in contact with her!

I'd go to Paris at any time - no question! :)

I was in Paris at the end of Jan. one year for a few days and it was cold!  And I'm someone who loves cold weather.  I also made the mistake of being there on a Monday when the shops were closed up, so I spent a lot of time wandering around streets looking at a lot graffiti-covered metal doors.  It was depressing.

Go someplace that's warmer than the U.S. in December!

My wife and I went to Paris in November a few years ago; it rained most of the time, but was not terribly cold. We stayed at Flor Rivoli (http://www.booking.com/hotel/fr/flor-rivoli-paris.en.html), which was perfect for us: clean, cheap, and extremely well located. We walked everywhere, even in the rain, and it was wonderful. There were few tourists anywhere, and I was continually mistaken, to my delight, for a Frenchman.

If you're an avid museum-goer like me you want the Paris Museum Pass (http://en.parismuseumpass.com/). I got the 6-day version, and it paid for itself in trips to the Louvre alone (I walked there at least once a day).

Europe has a damp cold in winter that chills to the bone.
