I guess the member-moderators got bored with their jobs.

Now I have the mental image of spam crawling with maggots and physically moving. Thanks, pry, thanks.

At least I can cross lunch off my to-do list!

But just think about all the spam you never saw because it got deleted before you came across it!

From this morning up until now, I have gotten rid of at least 11 spammers and all the posts they'd made. The other day I got 13 before breakfast. And that's just me -- the other member-mods are doing a lot of spam-zapping too.

I don't read every thread, though, so I'm sure I (at least) have missed some. PM me with the link or report it via the "report" link and I'll be sure to get to it, if someone else doesn't get it first.

Just curious- The report link includes a warning that the reporter's email is revealed when a post is reported. Can m-mods see our email addresses when we report posts?

When you report a post (either for spam or for some other reason), that report goes straight to the staff mods. We don't see it, we don't know that the post was reported, etc.

Sometimes forumites have PM'ed me if I'm around to say "spam cleanup on aisle 6!" or something like that -- but that's a regular PM and no one's email gets shared.

"spam cleanup on aisle 6!"

That would make a great thread title.

Hmmm....

Should we start such a thread? I always report spam as I find it, usually in the late evenings or very early mornings, but if that isn't visible to the spam patrol, I'm wasting my time if I understand this correctly.

Would a spam-alert thread where we post the name of the offending thread help the cleanup crew find and nuke these issues? Or would it just make more work as they'd have to check that thread even if someone else already cleaned up the mess?

I wouldn't object to a thread, however I think that we pick up most of the spam soon after it arrives most of the time and it might waste forumites' time to post thread titles/links only to find that the spam has already gone. When this thread was made, I think at least four of us were away/without access to the internet.

There's usually a member-moderator checking the last 100 posts or so, so it seems to me that it wouldn't make sense to always report spam right away, especially if a M-M is online.

It would probably be helpful though if it looks as though spam has been missed, e.g., older than an hour during the daytime or a couple of hours at night, earlier than the last 100 posts, a poster has changed his profile to a spammy one, or otherwise seems overlooked.

And yes, bioteacher, we don't see spam reports to the Moderators; we tend to encounter an on-thread reply such as "Reported" or "Go away spammer" sooner than the spam (if reading backwards in time), so that can be helpful. Up to you, though, do what you feel comfortable doing

This is a new one for me -- spam as a personal message. How to I report it to moderators?

This is even more impressive given that today, Vox is out of town, barely on the peripheries of the grid, and had to be up to desalinate her own water and field-dress a moose . . . all before she even got to the spam-zapping!

That's not even the half of it! ;)

Seniorscholar, that poster has already been reported, so you don't need to do anything. For future reference, though, you can report a PM the same way that you can report a post. If you want to send a link to the spammer's profile to a member-mod, we will be sure it gets reported (at least one of us probably got the same PM; I know I did and I bet I'm not the only one).
