the great vampire squid round the face of humanity

I assume regulars here have read (e.g. here) about the latest monstrosity.

I'm in the "squeezed middle".  Even if I wanted to take some sort of initiative that would lead to success under the conditions indicated by this proposal, I wouldn't have a clue what to do.  I certainly wouldn't want to provoke guffaws by suggesting that my path to success includes redoubled focus on the quality of my teaching.

I'd contemplate prayer, except that it might involve putting myself in a position that looks an awful lot like bending over.  Oh wait, I'm already there.

It's a stick to beat everyone (except the University of Buckingham) with equally but differently, so that HE can be completely defunded by the government and the door opened wide to for-profits.

The two main collegiate universities will not be able to expand to take any more students (because of legal, resource, and financial constraints), but they will be kicked on "access" targets, etc.

The rest of the top third may take more students, but they will be kicked on "customer satisfaction" as teaching contact time decreases even more.

You've spoken for the squeezed middle.

The bottom tier will be no-one's choice with an AAB, and as they expand, will be kicked on "employability" and "Mickey Mouse" degrees.

Meanwhile, that ***** David Lammy is on another FOI rampage.

Speechless.

My husband and I have been discussing the possibility of me moving posts from Scotland to an English University, but I really don't think I want to do that now.

On a related issue, it's been announced that Scottish Universities will be allowed to charge English students up to £9000 fees : http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-13951685 I don't think they could have done much else, to be honest.

What a nightmare. That takes England off my lists for good. How much bureaucracy must be set up to fulfill such a ridiculous assessment-driven enterprise? How much money squandered on "accountability" and "quality assurance"? I'm absolutely gobsmacked.

The fair access, student complaint and quality assurance bureaucracy already exists . . . and has done for a long time: those bits aren't actually the problem (they're a different problem, as anybody who's ever suffered a QAA audit can relate).
