An IDP isn't required for renting a car: it is recommended by both the French government and the US for driving in France as it provides a translation in multiple languages that is comparable to European licenses.

I wouldn't count on policemen in rural France to be able to read details in English on a US license.

Many rental locations have no automatics.  I knew someone who reserved an automatic and when she turned up they said, "Oh, nope, we don't have any of those."  Even though she'd reserved one.

Either you need to rent from a major location (large airport, etc.) or figure out another way of getting around.  Why not just rely on trains and buses?  I've been on two trips to France in the last three months; the one in which we relied on trains and buses was no less fun and scenic than the one in which we rented a car (stick shift).

Traffic?
As in other cars on the same road as me driving a stick?
This suddenly seems like not such a great plan.
Perhaps we'll stick with the buses.
I'd like to stay in the area where I am that isn't served by trains but I have a feeling my friend who is coming from Paris by train does want me to meet him at the trainstation rather than take the bus on his own. He isn't confident with his French and it's true that the accent here would really throw him for a loop.

Have you considered hiring a car and driver for a day to get around the less-well-served parts?

That might work out more cheaply than car hire, and be less stressful.

Again, negotiating in advance works out more cheaply than on the day.

If your friend can take a bus from the station, you can take a bus to the station to meet him.

Well, yes, I can but we are talking a 45 minute ride that gets me there 4 hours before his train comes.
There are a couple in the morning and a couple in the evening.
I'd prefer to stay in my house and read and write.

You can rent an automatic in France. You will pay through the nose, and you had better reserve it online rather than just show up at the rental counter. You can use your US license. Your friend, as sveral posters have noted, cannot drive it legally.

We rented the car in my friend's name and have had a great time. I'm soo glad I didn't try to pretend to know how to drive a manual. There have been tight squeezes and hairpin turns.
It's been lovely.

Glad to hear it worked out.
