It is mostly serious, with some very funny passages.   As in a contemporary battlefield visitor asking a ranger, Why were so many Civil War battles fought in national parks?

I enjoyed "For Cause and Comrades: Why Men Fought in the Civil War" by authorial titan James McPherson.
A good choise. It is a very interesting book, which I like very much

Thanks untenured, for this suggestion. I love McPherson's writing.
