A few weeks ago I submitted an abstract, right on the deadline.  I scoured the conference website and there was no word limit specified. I just received an email from the conference organizers, announcing the deadline has been extended.  The announcement contains a word limit and the original abstract I submitted is somewhat longer (450 vs 300 words).

Should I shorten my abstract and resubmit with a cover letter explaining?  Or just leave it?

Some people are really picky. I'd go ahead and resubmit it with the shorter abstract and a note. If they liked it the first time, no harm done. If they weren't sure, you've tightened it up. If they're the folks who are picky, you may have saved your submission.
