My department has a lecturer from Romania and a lecturer from the former Yugoslavia.  They had already been in Canada for several years when they were hired.  They have worked out well, but they had to adapt.  They seem to think that we have much lower standards in Canada than where they came from, and our courses are too easy.  However, as I said, they have adapted.  We also hired another person from Yugoslavia who was very arrogant and would not adapt.  He failed most of his students and the students hated him.  His contract was not renewed.

We're talking about keeping an eye on students for a few minutes ... not juggling cats while riding a unicycle on the high wire while singing arias and solving differential equations in one's head.
