Questions for an annual fund position interview?
«

I have an upcoming interview for an annual fund position at a private, 4-year college. This will be my first interview for a development job (I currently work in international program management and study abroad). I was wondering what some likely questions might be, particularly ones that would be evident to someone with experience in development, but perhaps not to someone relatively new to fundraising and development work?
Thank you.

Tell us about yourself. What is the highest degree you hold? Why advancement? What makes you think you can hack it in this very intense field?

Take a look at their IPEDS report, it will give you a broad understanding how the institution is funded and their allocations for services. Are they tuition driven? Where are their sources of revenue? Understanding the institution's fiscal priorities will give you a leg up on any interview. Annual reports also may give you insight on the school and it's upcoming strategies.

I was in on interviews last year for jobs like this. Your situation may be different, but we asked things like:
1. How do you ascertain the goals of a prospective donor?
2. What experience do you have with donor research and prospecting?
3. How able are you to travel?
4. How comfortable are you with "the ask?"
5. How do you approach relatives of major donors?
