I know this is ignorant, but a librarian neighbour that I have is on sabbatical. I was too embarrassed to ask what a librarian does with a sabbatical (apparently, they do a lot of weeding)....

One colleague librarian visits interesting archives around the world, and writes books on books.

Another visits leading libraries in the specialist field and writes articles on library management.

So pretty much what any academic would do on sabbatical, I think, including meditative and/or procrastination and displacement activities such as weeding.

My hovercraft is full of eels, so I don't suppose snails in a fish tank is so very strange.

Research-y stuff.  I had a colleague use her sabbatical time to work from home to supply all of the literature reviews for a huge science grant.  I had another acquaintance put together and run a big information literacy research study.  Another one wrote a book about online learning.

Spending a sabbatical weeding sounds dreadful to me, but I guess to each her own!

Our academic librarians have to write articles and do research/ design instruction just like faculty. The librarian probably took some time to write, redesign freshpeep bibliographic instruction, or perhaps develop new ways to help grad students and researchers in her subject specialty. Just guessing.

As a librarian, I've had two sabbaticals.  One was used on research for a book publication.  The other was to catalog our 2000 LP collection for access in the online catalog.

I have a colleague helping set up a library in a developing country while doing research for an annotated bibliography. He's enjoying access to primary sources while learning an appreciation for consistent electrical power back home.
