Since my fax (not my ship; my fax) has not come in, devastating my daily productivity, I have a question for everyone in Foraville:

At some point each of us, from lurker to VDSM, had to find out about the Fora for the first time.  I stumbled on it by accident during my third round on the academic job market.  (How I wish I'd found it earlier!)

The four options I've initially listed in the poll are the four that come most readily to mind.  If you found your way here through some other means, PM me or post it in the thread, and I'll update the poll.

I found them before the "old" new software came along in 2006 -- I'd lurked and read and occasionally posted for at least six months before that, but there wasn't as much of a sense of community, since we didn't have established monikers (and the interface was pretty horrible, frankly). So it wasn't as much fun as it is now.

I was just looking at the Chronicle one day, and I saw the link for forums, so I clicked on it. This was before the registration, too. My first post was April 12, 2005.

I was googling for good, comfy shoes for professors to teach in (my feet were killing me that day!) and the shoes for humanists thread was the top hit.

Ridiculous, but true.

I was looking for some information on getting my hubby a (non-academic) job while doing my academic search. I registered and posted a bit, but mainly lurked for a couple of months until I broke down and "joined" at the end of my first "real" teaching experience.

I don't remember the details, but I know I was looking at the CHE site in connection with my job search.  I first posted on Christmas Day 2006, about six or seven months after the new software and stable monikers were introduced.  I was seduced by the warmth, wit, and practicality of the posts I read here.

How did I find the Fora?

Hmmm...

I remember walking to my building on campus.  It was a beautiful fall afternoon and I was whistling an old Tom Waits song, just minding my own business.  Suddenly I heard a loud bang and everything went dark.

The next few moments are foggy and I don't remember much until these blinding bright lights flashed on and I found myself in this large pale blue room.  I had to feel my way around a little bit at first and let my eyes adjust because I couldn't see a thing. Once I could focus, the first thing I noticed was a little hamster wearing some kind of hat.  It ran across my foot and I tried to catch it but it scurried off under a door.  I followed it down the hall but it was too fast.

And so now, here I am.  I never did find that hamster.

By the way...does anyone know how to get to McAffee Hall from here?

Very tasty today, thank you, though a little chewy and tough in places.

Such a hard end for a hamster, Merino.  Have you no pity, have you no shame.

Oddly, last spring, I was reading Not Always Right (http://notalwaysright.com/) and laughing, but then decided I wanted to read some funny student stories. A search for that and related terms brought up the "Bang Your Head ..." thread.

I lurked for most of the summer and then joined in August.

Moody, you're reminding me of the first long thread I read before I registered: the saga of Picky Eater. That (and "Peter Icky") made me realize that I really wanted to hang out with people who could make me laugh so hard that I teared up.

I still love Picky Eater. I wonder where she is now.

A deranged student posted about me here, and sent me copies of the posts.
