Will work for yoga

« on: May 24, 2011, 09:03:23 PM »

So, after interviewing for a full-time instructor position in English at a local community college, I was offered a summer, adjunct position. I am still a candidate for the full time position, but will not hear about the outcome until all the interviews are completed.

This will be my first higher ed position after teaching primarily at the secondary level both before and after I completed grad school.

Despite the mostly negative, be they realistic, posts regarding adjunct work, I am very excited and very happy to be hired after being laid off due to budget cuts and working retail for the past year.

Also, teaching at the college level has been my dream and being that I am the only one in my family who completed college, let alone graduate school, I am very proud of myself.

Perhaps, I am in for a rude awakening, but for now I am excited about the new opportunity and am looking forward to being a role model for other young women who come from similar backgrounds.

I pray that despite the low pay, long hours, and commute that I will not become jaded or unappreciative of this blessing. I urge you all to look at what you do have and to look at the difference you are making in your students' lives.

If it weren't for my first adjunct instructors who encouraged and nurtured me, I wouldn't have continue along this awesome path toward higher education.

Namaste,

the new kid

I enjoyed being an adjunct. No, it wasn't long-term sustainable, but I enjoyed the work.

I wish you well!

If you need me, I'll be hiding under a rock until mid-August. Try not to need me, unless you come bearing Chinese food.

Good luck, Namaste!  It's not the easiest row, but I'm sure you'll do trailblazing good stuff out there!

I really loved being an adjunct too (just finished a year of teaching in this way). I'm glad to have found a TT job, but adjuncting was very rewarding for me.

I wish you the best!
