Whither Canada?

Congratulations on getting the accounting certificate! That's inspiring to me-since I need to start something new. Cane or no cane, glad you walked across to the finish line!

+1! Congratulations!

<revives zombie  thread>

I just tried to squish a spider in my apartment and kind of missed. It ended up on my foot and I think it bit me. I don't know what sort of spider it was and I subsequently squished it so I can't post a picture. It was medium sized and black, if that helps. I am hoping it wasn't poisonous as I don't have health insurance yet.  I'm in the Midwest -- are there a lot of poisonous house spiders here?

Although there are black widows in the midwest they tend to live outdoors rather than in.  Also they are not aggressive.

Most spiders aren't poisonous but it never hurts to clean a bite with soap and water and put some antibacterial ointment on.

The two kinds to worry about are Black Widows (tend to live in webs in doorways, bushes, etc.) and the Brown Recluse (likes to hide out in damp spots, like your shoes).

That being said, people can still get reactions to your basic wolf spider bite, so wash the spot like molli said.

To point 1 -- though not aggressive, they will presumably bite things that try to step on them.

To point 2 -- this is true, it's incredibly unlikely that any indoor-dwelling spider in the midwest is venomous enough to do you any real damage. The bite may be worse than a mosquito bite, but I really wouldn't worry about it, beyond normal cleaning and care.

It wasn't a black widow. I know what they look like.

The spider probably wasn't aggressive. I have a pathological fear of spiders so when it landed on me, let's just say I didn't calmly push it off. That's probably why it bit me (if it did bite me. I have various injuries on my feet from bad shoes and moving anyway, so I could be being paranoid and mistaking one of those for a bite, but it is kind of itchy). I'll clean it anyway and keep an eye on it.

Oh, and comparing it to mosquito bites isn't the best way for me to judge how bad a bite is as I'm insanely allergic to mosquito bites. When mosquitoes bite me the bites swell up so much it looks like I broke a bone or something.

At the risk of sounding gross, the spider bite that I got looked very bad. It was on the back of my knee, so I didn't see it, but my leg started swelling and hurting, and then I looked behind my knee--the bite looked more like a big infected cut. It was a bad infection, but luckily not necrosis.

Anyway, since I didn't have the spider, no one really knew what kind of spider it was. I could have had a bad reaction to just a regular spider.

Clean it and keep and eye on it.

(They also gave me a tetanus shot at the hospital.)

I used antiseptic on it. I think it is definitely a bite, but I'm not getting a reaction to it like I do with mosquitoes.

Mine wasn't immediate at all.

It'll probably be fine, Chaos, but do keep an eye on it.

The bite seems fine. It is a tiny bit swollen and itchy, but I keep putting antiseptic cream on it and it is nowhere near as bad as mosquito bites are on me. And I'm still alive, so clearly the spider wasn't poisonous.

I got some sort of a bite that was very red and sore. I went to the doctor when a red line started to extend from the center. The doctor thought it was a spider bite and thought the red line was caused by the venom burning a path. Ewwww. He circled the red spot and line and told me if the line extended any further to come back. It didn't and I was fine.
