The forums really would benefit from the ability to subscribe and unsubscribe to threads. As it stands, once you've participated in a thread, you will see any reply in that thread which occurs into the infinite future if you go to ?action=unreadreplies. It is useful to be able to subscribe to a thread you have not participated in ("lurk" only), or unsubscribe to a thread you have participated in (sick of it, don't want to read it any more).

If there is a way to do either of these things, I haven't found it. Nearly every other web-based forum I participate in has these options.

The software doesn't allow it. It isn't a CHE call.

Look at it as a Foucauldian constraint.  You should think very, very carefully before replying to any thread.

So, I will be forever haunted by "venting thread" and "game time: free association" or "New game: word mangling". Great.

I'm sure it wouldn't be difficult to get in the php code an add an option next to a default-subscribe thread to unsubscribe. Consider that a polite request.

Edit: Turns out there is a mod that allows unsubscribin to a thread, but it requires a later version of hte software:

Did you actually listen when I said it wasn't an option with the version of the SMF software that the fora use, or did you just think I was talking out of my ass?

Now, if you wish to entreat the CHE IT folks to upgrade the software, be my guest. Many have tried, none have succeeded.

WTF is your problem? This is the "questions and comments" forum. So I presume somebody who actually has control over the software side of things might actually be reading this, and take it into consideration.

Have a nice day [Edited for name-calling -moderator].

I don't think it's the right hand that will be in question...
