So I'm heading to Key West for a wedding of a dear friend.  The wedding is on the beach as sunset, the whole deal.  I've never been to Key West, or anywhere in Florida south of Cape Canaveral.

Should I fly into Miami or Ft. Lauderdale and rent a car or pay the extra to fly into Key West itself?  It costs about the same either way once you add in the car rental and gas.  All things being equal I'd like to experience the drive on the overseas highway but is it worth it?  How is traffic?  Any hints on places to stay?  Things to do?  I'm not really a "nightlife" person but I do enjoy good seafood, good beer and good music in moderation.

It was a few years back, and I drove, while the drive was nice, I though that flying in would make more sense if I went back.  To be clear, I live close enough to the ocean so I don't go gaga for open water when I see it.  I'm not a nightclubber, either, but there were a good number of bars and music sort of places.  I recall visiting Hemingway's house and the place that invented or is known for Key Lime Pie.  I recall there were not many beaches in KW itself, but if you have a car, then more back up the island chain.

I was there a couple months ago, and the drive is not that spectacular. Actually, it's a bit disconcerting given the proliferation of strip malls until you reach Key West proper (that is, the older part of Key West - the southwest tip where most of the action is - the first part you run into is more strip malls and general lameness). The views aren't that great most of the way. I would fly in if I were to go again. It was a pleasant place to be for a few days.

Fly into Miami and rent a car. The drive over the overseas highway is a great experience. Take the Card Sound Road route and stop at Alabama Jacks. You will now feel like you are in the old keys. The traffic is horrible on a Friday afternoon but not really terrible during the week. I definitely prefer the Pier House at the end of Duval street. Probably the best restaurant in town is Louie's Backyard. Right on the water. Have breakfast at Blue Heaven or Pepe's.
It would be good if you had enough time to really enjoy the ride and check out many of the rustic and fine places along the way. The Half Moon Raw Bar is fun if you like rustic places for seafood and beer.

If you like cats (a lot), don't miss Hemingway's house!

We have been to KW a lot the last few years. I think the drive is pretty spectacular. Make it leisurely, take some stops and even a swim or two on the way.

If you drive, be sure to plan your timing so that you avoid the periods when the bridges are up to accommodate sailboats. Even with light traffic you could find yourself trapped waiting for the boats to go through (which is pretty, but not that spectacular after 1 or 2 delays).

Key West itself is very walkable, so you don't need a car while on the island, plus you can rent bicycles and scooters if you want.

Some of the drive through the Keys isn't all that attractive, but some of it is actually quite pretty, especially at sunset.  And the Seven-Mile Bridge is fun.  But if you don't feel the need to see that, I recommend flying.  It's a lot faster--an hour to fly, versus three or four hours to drive.

But lurkingfear is slightly mistaken: The older part of Key West ("Old Town") is the entire western part of the island, and the area "where most of the action is" is actually the northwest tip.  That's where most of the well-known bars are, and their noise and general rowdiness often spills into the street.  The southwest end is actually pretty quiet, even on a Saturday night.  All of Old Town is very pretty, very quaint, and, yes, very walkable.  You definitely don't need a car, and parking is impossible.  Scooters or bicycles are the way to go, once you're there.

I think the drive to Key West is wonderful! I wouldn't want to miss it. If you can make even more time, spend a day or 2 in the Everglades before/after you drive into the Keys.

Thank you all for the advice!

My plane tickets to Ft. Lauderdale are booked and a rental car is reserved.  I'll let you all know how the trip goes.

Enjoy!  I think you will really enjoy the drive.  It is long, but so beautiful and worth it.  We did it years ago, and I would go back (drive) in a heartbeat.  I remember the drive more than I remember Key West.

And by goes I of course meant the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite.  Just checking on the weather for my trip of course.
