Onthefringe,
Thank you for the suggestion. I have been told that the tenure clock starts around September. If I joined this year before sept, the tenure clock would start last sept (2010). If I join in 2012 Jan, still tenure clock will start 2011 sept. So not much advantage of defering. I may ask about extending tenure clock due to child birth.
In a way I am eager to go to the new place and get everything started rather than prolonging.

In fact I am trying to figure out ways to start this summer and have tenure clock start in Sept (2011).

Mindz, let me suggest something a little different:  do not make any announcements until you are farther along, contract or no contract.  You're already worrying about miscarrying.  Now, God forbid that your fears materialize, but it seems to be common sense to wait until at least your second trimester, when you're feeling better and more confident.  That paragon of etiquette, Miss Manners, would advise you to announce a pregnancy just before someone else announces it to you (e.g., you're showing).  I'd wait until you're at fifth month or so just to be on the safe side on many fronts and, anyway, until you actually get there and you're an employee, it isn't really anyone's business.  I don't see any need to defer the start date--you sound very much like a highly motivated superstar who will do very well indeed.

And:  congratulations on so many wonderful things happening at once!

Do you hail from Planet Hello Kitty?

It's like an action movie, but boring.
